City of Valley

Early in its beginning, Valley lost some of its historic buildings and from that experience gained a newfound determination not to lose anymore. Valley believes that in order to build a future you have to know where you're going, but  to know where you're going, you also have to know where you've been. In Valley, we're extremely proud of our rich, southern, textile-mill heritage with its ethos of honest, hard-working people; we're proud of  our stately, old  buildings that are still standing as a visual memory of another age and another time.  We want  to preserve all of this for future generations and we want to share it with everyone interested in the old, southern, textile traditions and history.

In August 1992, an ordinance was adopted by  the City Council that established the Historic Preservation Commission. This commission has 10 members who are appointed by the City Council. The creation of a Historic Preservation Commission has greatly enhanced the City's ability to preserve its historic past. Through the work of this Commission and the Valley City Council, 15 properties were initially designated as historic landmarks. This designation protects these properties, in an historic perspective, from being desecrated . In addition, there are over 1,200 structures in the City of Valley that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1996, Valley was named a Certified Local Government by the State of Alabama Historic Commission, and in 2002, the Historic Preservation Commission won the Distinguished Service Award from the State Historic Commission.
