August 12th City Council Meeting

The Valley City Council held its first regular scheduled meeting of August on Monday, August 12, 2019, in the Council Chambers at Valley City Hall.

Mayor Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00PM. The invocation was given by Councilmember Jim Jones and Councilmember Randall Maddux led the Pledge of Allegiance. All members were present

Prior to official council business 2 public hearings were held:

  • Confirm costs of clean-up at the following properties:
    • 1034 Carter Lane
    • 1804 55th Street
    • 2405 31st Street
    • 5507 21st Avenue
  • Consideration of revoking the business license of Family Tax Service

The August 12th financial audit report for the city was given as follows:

  • Checking account previous balance............................  $3,721,224.02
  • Total deposits all funds......................................................  $752,893.16
  • Total expenditures all funds...............................................  $699,421.67
  • Total on-hand all funds.................................................... $3,774,695.51

Mayor Riley made the following appointments:

  • Reappointed Brenda Jones to a 3-year term on the Board of Adjustments
  • Appointed Barbara Brooks to the Valley Historic Preservation Commission
  • Appointed Councilmembers Clark, Maddux, and Cooper to serve on the Committee for Gun Ordinance

The following actions were taken by the city council at the August 12th meeting:

  • Approved the minutes from the July 22nd council meeting
  • Accepted the August 12th financial audit report
  • Passed unanimously the following items in the night’s Consent Agenda
    • Resolution 2019-080R confirming the costs of abatement of the public nuisance at 1034 Carter Lane
    • Resolution 2019-081R confirming the costs of abatement of the public nuisance at 1804 55th Street
    • Resolution 2019-082R confirming the costs of abatement of the public nuisance at 2405 31st Street
    • Resolution 2019-083R confirming the costs of abatement of the public nuisance at 5507 21st Avenue
    • Resolution 2019-084R authorizing Mayor Riley to enter into agreement with East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission for the 2019-2020 Senior Center Funding Grant (#05-20-05-41)
    • Resolution 2019-085R confirming the City’s commitment to partnering with the U.s Census Bureau and the State of Alabama for the upcoming 2020 Census
    • Resolution 2019-086R confirming the City’s establishment of a 2020 Census Complete Count Committee
  • Passed unanimously Resolution 2019-087R declaring property at 7776 School Street as a public nuisance and authorizing the abatement of the nuisance
  • Passed unanimously Resolution 2019-088R accepting the bid of $645,500 from Schmidt Environmental Construction, Inc., which was the lowest of the four bids received, for the construction of a Booster Pump station on the Burney Property
  • Passed unanimously Resolution 2019-089R revoking the business license for Family Tax Service
  • Passed unanimously Resolution 2019-090R authorizing the assignment and assumption of services from Mr. Greenjeans Sanitation Services, Inc to AMWaste LLC
  • Suspended the rules and passed on its first reading, the following ordinance:
    • 2019-19 accepting the $500 offer from Dorothy H. Phillips for surplus, city-owned property with the address known as East of Tutt Street and Norwest of Larry Lane

The mayor made the following announcement:

  1. The next Council Meeting will be Monday, August 26th, at 6:00 pm at Valley City Hall
