February 25th City Council Meeting

The Valley City Council held its second regular scheduled meeting of February on Monday, February 25th, 2019, in the Council Chambers at Valley City Hall.

Mayor Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00PM. The invocation was given by Councilmember Marquetta Madden and Councilmember Cassie Carlisle led the Pledge of Allegiance. All members were present.

The February 25th financial audit report for the city was given as follows:

  • Checking account previous balance........................... $4,509,754.93
  • Total deposits all funds................................................  $1,420,394.48
  • Total expenditures all funds...........................................$1,802,205.62
  • Total on-hand all funds................................................. $4,127,943.79

During the Mayor’s Communications, he called for a public hearing to be held at the March 11th meeting to confirm costs at 1125 Foster Circle and Bennett Street.

The following actions were taken by the city council at the February 25th meeting:

  • Approved the minutes from the February 11th, 2019, council meeting
  • Accepted the February 25th financial audit report
  • Approved unanimously the following resolutions on the Consent Agenda
    • Resolution 2019-023R authorizing Mayor Riley to enter into contract with East Alabama Occupational Medicine to provide medical services to the city
    • Resolution 2019-024R authorizing Mayor Riley to enter into contract with WestRock Packaging Systems, the Chambers County Development Authority, and Chambers County, Alabama, to promote business and industrial development in Chambers County
    • Resolution 2019-025R approving a $300 cash advance to  councilmembers attending the Alabama League of Municipalities Conference in Mobile on May 4th-7th
    • Resolution 2019-026R awarding bids for cutting timber on the Burney Property to East Alabama Lumber Co. (Tract A - $140,000) and Baseline Forest Service (Tract B - $10,000 ± )
    • Resolution 2019-027R approving a budget amendment for a $10,000 contribution to the Food Bank of East Alabama
    • Resolution 2019-028R approving a budget amendment for a $10,000 contribution to the Circle of Care
    • Resolution 2019-029R declaring a public nuisance and authorizing the abatement of the nuisance at 2310 38th Boulevard
    • Resolution 2019-030R declaring a public nuisance and authorizing the abatement of the nuisance at 2408 31st Street
  • Passed unanimously Resolution 2019-031R authorizing Mayor Riley to enter into contract with Alabama Power Company to lease property owned by the City of Valley
  • Suspended the rules and passed unanimously on its first reading Ordinance 2019-01 assenting to the annexation of Chambers County BOE property into the City of Valley
  • Voted and elected Jim Clark as the new councilmember for District 1 and passed unanimously Resolution 2019-032R confirming the election results

The mayor made the following announcements:

        1. The next council meeting will be March 11th at 6:00pm at Valley City Hall
        2. Valley Clean-Up Day will be Saturday, April 6th – Household Garbage the week of April
            1st & Yard Debris the week of April 8.
