July 22nd City Council Meeting

The Valley City Council held its second regular scheduled meeting of July on Monday, July 22 2019, in the Council Chambers at Valley City Hall.

Mayor Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00PM. The invocation was given by Councilmember Jim Clark and Councilmember Randall Maddux led the Pledge of Allegiance. Councilmember Jim Jones was absent.

Prior to official council business a public hearing was held on the rezoning of property on Columbus Road from R2 to FAR.

Mayor Riley called for a public hearing at the August 12 council meeting to confirm costs of clean-up at the following properties:

  • 1034 Carter Lane
  • 1804 55th Street
  • 2405 31st Street
  • 5507 21st Avenue

Councilmember Madden read and presented to Diane Perry a proclamation proclaiming August 2 a Day of Prayer for Chambers County.

House District 38 Representative Debbie Wood gave a legislative update to the council.

The July 22nd financial audit report for the city was given as follows:

  • Checking account previous balance............................  $3,995,929.65
  • Total deposits all funds.....................................................  $416,698.35
  • Total expenditures all funds..............................................  $691,403.98
  • Total on-hand all funds.................................................... $3,721,224.02

The following actions were taken by the city council at the July 22nd meeting:

  • Approved the minutes from the July 8th council meeting
  • Accepted the July 22nd financial audit report
  • Passed unanimously the following items in the night’s Consent Agenda
    • Resolution 2019-075R authorizing Valley Police Chief Tommy Weldon to enter into an annually renewing agreement with the City of Auburn Department of Public Safety allowing off-duty Valley police officers to provide security services at certain athletic events
    • Resolution 2019-076R authorizing Valley Police Chief Weldon to enter into a contract with the Chambers County Board of Education to provide 3 resource officers for schools in the City of Valley
  • Passed unanimously Resolution 2019-077R calling for a public hearing at the August 12 council meeting to consider revoking the business license of Family Tax Service
  • Passed unanimously Resolution 2019-078R approving funding for the Valley Boys 9-10 Year-old Baseball All Stars participating in the Dixie Youth Baseball World Series in Lumberton, North Carolina. The funds will be used for rooms for the boys and their families and for new jerseys for the boys. The estimated cost is $8,800.
  • Passed unanimously Resolution 2019-079R accepting the bid of $1,749,100 from Phoenix Fabricators & Erectors for the construction of a 750M Gallon Elevated Water Tank. This was the lower of 2 bids received.
  • Suspended the rules and passed on their first reading, the following ordinances:
    • 2019-16 accepting the $1,000 offer from Reginald Brady for surplus, city-owned property at 304 Hodges Street
    • 2019-17 amending the existing zoning ordinance to reclassify property at 2335 Columbus Road from R2 to FAR
    • 2019-18 accepting the $2,500 offer from Willie Reed and Lashunda Reed for surplus, city-owned property at California Road

The mayor made the following announcement:

  1. The next Council Meeting will be Monday, August 12, at 6:00 pm at Valley City Hall

Council adjourned at 7:06pm.
