March 12th City Council Meeting

The Valley City Council held its first regular scheduled meeting of March on Monday, March 12th, 2018, in the Council Chambers at Valley City Hall.

Mayor Leonard Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00PM. The invocation was given by Councilmember Paul Story and Councilmember Jim Jones led the Pledge of Allegiance. All members were present.

Prior to official council business 2 public hearings were held on rezoning the following properties:

  • Property at 40th Street and 20th Avenue
  • Property at 231 Huguley Road

The March 12th financial audit report for the city was given as follows:

  • Checking account previous balance.................. $6,096,123.06
  • Total deposits all funds............................................ $461,497.14
  • Total expenditures all funds.................................... $486,450.99
  • Total on-hand all funds......................................... $6,071,169.21

During the Mayor’s Communication, the following occurred

  • John Boles of Barfield, Murphy, Shank U Smith presented the city’s 2017 audit to council
  • The mayor called for public hearings to be held at the April 9th council meeting for rezoning of 2 properties at Mapp Road and 404 Boulevard

The following actions were taken by the city council at the March 12th meeting:

  • Approved the minutes from the February 26th, 2018, council meeting
  • Accepted the March 12th financial audit report
  • Approved unanimously the following resolutions on the Consent Agenda
    • Resolution 2018-047R vacating a portion of 57th Street
    • Resolution 2018-048R adopting the Title VI program for the Valley Senior Center as a requirement for receiving federal financial assistance from the Alabama Department of Transportation in support of transit services provided by the Valley Senior Center
    • Resolution 2018-049R adopting the Title VI program for the Valley Parks & Recreation Department as a requirement for receiving federal financial assistance from the Alabama Department of Transportation in support of transit services provided by the Valley Parks & Recreation Department
    • Resolution 2018-050R declaring 2 Public Works vehicle as surplus to be sold according to existing municipal policy and state law
    • Resolution 2018-051R providing for an exemption of the City Sales and Use Tax on purchases of items covered by Act No. 2017-120 beginning at 12:01 a.m. on July 20, 2018, and ending at twelve midnight on Sunday, July 22, 2018.
  • Approved unanimously Resolution 2018-052R accepting the bid of $48,500 from The Henry Hudson for the demolition of the city’s Riverview Gymnasium property
  • Suspended the rules and approved unanimously, on its first reading, Ordinance 2018-04 rezoning property on 40th street to R6
  • Suspended the rules and approved unanimously, on its first reading, Ordinance 2018-04 rezoning property at 231 Huguley Road to C2

The council meeting adjourned at 6:31PM.
