May 14th City Council Meeting

The Valley City Council held its second regular scheduled meeting of May on Monday, May 14th, 2018, in the Council Chambers at Valley City Hall.

Mayor Leonard Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00PM. The invocation was given by Councilmember Henry Cooper and Councilmember Cassie Carlisle led the Pledge of Allegiance. All members were present.

Prior to official council business public hearings on the following properties were held:

  • 1500 54th Street
  • 121 Patton Hill
  • 3154 Columbus Road
  • 374 Summerhill Road
  • 135 G.I. Street

The May 14th financial audit report for the city was given as follows:

  • Checking account previous balance.................. $6,761,749.91
  • Total deposits all funds............................................ $102,681.17
  • Total expenditures all funds.................................... $268,245.69
  • Total on-hand all funds......................................... $6,596,185.39

During the Mayor’s Communication, Councilmember Paul Story read and presented a proclamation declaring the week of May 20-26 as Emergency Medical Services Week in the City of Valley. EMS Director Scott Hamil and EMTs Glenn Johnson and Hal Sellers accepted the proclamation.

The following actions were taken by the city council at the May 14th meeting:

  • Approved the minutes from May 7th 2018, council meeting
  • Accepted the May 14th financial audit report
  • Approved unanimously the following resolutions on the Consent Agenda
    • Resolution 2018-074R declaring property at 1125 Foster Circle a public nuisance and authorizing action to abate the nuisance
    • Resolution 2018-075R declaring property at Trail Street a public nuisance and authorizing action to abate the nuisance
    • Resolution 2018-076R declaring property at Bennett Street a public nuisance and authorizing action to abate the nuisance
    • Resolution 2018-077R imposing a lien of $5,434.91on property at 3154 Columbus Road
    • Resolution 2018-078R imposing a lien of $5,750.00 on property at 135 GI Street
    • Resolution 2018-079R imposing a lien of $5,750.00 on property at 121 Patton Hill
    • Resolution 2018-080R imposing a lien of $9,727.67 on property at 374 Summerhill Road
    • Resolution 2018-081R imposing a lien of $1,059.33 on property at 1500 54th Street
    • Resolution 2018-082R terminating the janitorial service contract with Shorod Harris Janitorial of Lanett, Alabama
  • Resolution 2018-083R authorizing the mayor to spend money, not to exceed $150,000, to develop roads within the industrial park
  • Resolution 2018-084R accepting the bid of $64,2540.00 from Game Day Athletic Surfaces, which was the only bid received, for Laser Top Grading for fields at the Sportsplex, Ram Stadium, and the Community Center Practice Fields
  • Resolution 2018-085R authorizing the mayor to submit applications to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, Office of Program Management requesting $500,000 funding from the Fiscal Year 2018 Community Development Block Grant program and $250,000 funding from the Appalachia Regional Commission for infrastructure improvement projects that will serve the John Soules Food production plant locating in Valley

The mayor made the following announcements:

  • The next city council meeting would be June 11
